If you’re leaning into the offhealing capabilities of the Paladin, Kind Wayfarer is almost certainly the way to go. Great to pair with the Chanter’s bonus healing phrase. Kind Wayfarer is, in my opinion, the overall best Paladin subclass as it turns Flames of Devotion into a team-wide lifesteal. Kind Wayfarer – Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin Subclasses If you want increased engagements, go with Shieldbearer. There’s nothing much else to be said about that if you want increased armor on your tank, go for this.

Goldpact Knight is another good option for a tank build, as it upgrade Sworn Enemy to also increase the Paladin’s armor. Shieldbearer is your go-to subclass for any tank due to its bonus to engagement while equipped with a shield. You almost certainly won’t notice it in practice, except as a visual cue that your Paladin healed someone successfully. Darcozzi Paladini – Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin Subclassesĭarcozzi Paladins have their Lay on Hands ability upgraded to give a flame shield to the recipient of the heal. I’m not sure that creating a single class damage-oriented Paladin is a good idea (no matter how damage oriented you make a Paladin, it will never come close to the damage output of any other class), but if you want to increase the survivability of a Rogue, Cipher or Monk, Bleak Walker makes an excellent multiclass option. Blade turning deals with overwhelming physical forces. Which generates an interrupt & shockwave every time a debuff expires (sadly the forbidden first curse doesn't count). Crucibal of suffering has a really high uptime in this setup and synergizes further with Rooting pain. Combined with Clarity of Agony it is really hard to stick any debuff to him. Maxing resolve the Forbidden Fist curse lasts a really short time (enfeeble is nasty debuff that is otherwise hard to come by). Get her the One Dozen Stood Armor to really put the hurt on anyone disengaging.Īn interesting concept I haven't fully figured out yet is Forbidden Fist / Shieldbearer or Unbroken.Ī Monk tank sounds weird at first but this dude is an interrupt machine that shrugs off just about anything. Pretty tanky with fighter stats & trickster buffs, persistent distraction, riposte, deathblows, and a metric fuckton of engagement slots. The tank I'm always coming back to is the Unbroken Fighter / Trickster Rogue. Stalker Ranger gets you a friend to tank alongside (the Bear is nice for this). A Berserker Barbarian turns down the Deflection, but compensates with more Armor, more damage, and some fun leapin' and screamin'. A Soul-Blade Cipher is a popular choice for more damage and utility, although they're more fragile than some of these others mentioned, and you should beware that their best defensive ability doesn't stack with a Fighter's Vigorous Defense. As noted above, Chanter is popular because you want their auras near where the action is, they can be built for self-healing, and some of the best invocations are short-range cone AoEs. Trickster Rogue gets you a few of the best melee-Wizard spells and adds more weapon damage and a fantastic built-in engagement-slot skill. Wizard works great with either, and is super-flexible. But the other half depends on what else you want to get out of them, and the style of play you prefer. You'll likely want a multiclassed character who uses Fighter or Paladin for half of their build. That's why Herald (PAL-CHA) is such a popular choice- they're tanky enough to hold up in the vast majority of circumstances, and can also contribute a nice suite of buff, debuff, heal, and summon abilities that a "pure tank" lacks. The trick with building a "tank" character in this game is not to go too far- devoting 20% of your party to pure tankiness going to be a disadvantage in the vast majority of encounters. Sure, you could build an Unbroken-Shieldbearer and be pretty untouchable, but that's overkill. I don't think that's really the right question to be asking. So which class is considered to be ‚the best one’ to tank now?
